Evington used to be a small village centred on Main Street and the Church of St Denys. It was close enough to Leicester to become on if it’s outer suburbs in the 1930s. It is a now an electoral ward which also includes Rowlatts Hill and Goodwood and is also an administrative division of the city of Leicester.

The name Evington originates from the Anglo-Saxon times and would have been known by the name Aufa’s Tun – the settlement of Aefa’s people. The village is mentioned in the Domesday survey of 1086.

The Parish of Evington was quite large and originally also included the areas of North Evington and Evington Valley, these areas were annexed by the borough of Leicester in 1892 and are no longer considered to be part of Evington.

Evington Village has been a conservation area since 1989.

The geographical features of the village provide an explanation for the settlement in the area as it is set on a plateau about 100m above sea level offering a drier and better-drained site that that situated in the valley of Evington Brook.

Evington is home to two main shopping centres, one which is largely based in a modern development near the old village and includes the local library, and the second towards the northern end of Downing Drive.

There are a few public houses in the vicinity including the Cedars in the old village and the Dove at the north. There is also a village hall with a timetable of events and activities.

Evington is home to the Leicestershire Golf Club, on the south of the village, and west of the arboretum.

The largest employer in the area is the Leicester General Hospital, located near Goodwood on Coleman Road which is south of Uppingham Road (the A47).

There is a community newspaper called the Evington Echo and is produced by a team of volunteers and is posted to 5,800 houses in the area free of charge.
