The oldest known human settlement in Ratby was an iron age camp on the outskirts dating back roughly 3000 years. Later, Romans were known to have made changes to the camp to use as a fort during 50 AD.
Ratby has been a small agricultural village for most of its history with a few farms. This lasted till the 18th Century. In the 20th Century, a war memorial named the “Angel of Peace” was unveiled after the first world war by the British Army Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Haig.
Ratby is a sought-after place to live in Leicester mainly for the fact that Ratby Sports Club is the home of the football and cricket teams. This is where former England international Emile Heskey started his football career in the 90s with local team Ratby Groby Juniors. Another reason is that the village is home to the Ratby Cooperative brass band. The band are known to regularly rehearse in their own band room on Taverner Drive. The band is highly regarded within the brass band community particularly for their excellent work with youth, particularly those within the village. The band has around 150 members.
The focal point of this small village is the Co-op supermarket which is opposite the Ratby Sports Club. The primary school, Ratby Primary School, is also positioned near the village centre beside the local library and three pubs. Other services include a multitude of hairdressers, a post office and the village hall. If the Co-op isn’t for you, there’s a local convenience store next to one of the two Chinese takeaways.
Despite the quiet village life, this beautiful town is only one mile from Junction 21a of the M1. In addition to this, if you’re working in Leicester and can’t drive, don’t be put off the move to Ratby. It’s only 5 miles from the centre of Leicester with regular bus services provided by Arriva to and from the city, making a possible daily commute easy. The village is known to form part of the Leicester Urban Area on Arriva buses due to the proximity of Ratby and Leicester.
