How to pack for moving house

moving house

It’s well known that moving house can be incredibly challenging, both mentally and physically. There is a lot of paperwork to be completed, phone calls to be made and boxes to be packed. In a recent poll, two thirds of people voted moving house top of their stress list, with it triggering more anxiety than relationship breakdowns, divorce and starting a new job.

So, it is important to be fully prepared to make the process as stress free as possible. After all, you might not just be changing your home and getting to know the new one, you might be in a new area of Leicester, and need to find new schools for your children, take on a new commute to work and even find a new GP and dentist. With all of this going on it is important that you pack efficiently and in a method that will be organised when you come to unpack.

De-clutter

Before you leave your current home, it is important to think ahead and de-clutter before you start your move. There is no point moving belongings you no longer want to a new house. Start from the top of the house and work down, don’t forget attics, garages and sheds and try to be as ruthless as you can. De-cluttering your property can also be therapeutic and set you off in good stead for your new adventure.

Organisation

It doesn’t matter if it is an item of extreme sentimental value or your kitchen crockery set, everything you are moving should be packed safely and securely to avoid breakages. To avoid this, it is important to be prepared. Items such as labels, boxes, acid free paper and breathable bubble wrap are all important to ensure that everything makes it to your new home in one piece.moving house

It is also important that before you start packing you have everything you will need; Thick cardboard, strong cardboard boxes in various sizes, heavy duty packing tape, cellotape, bubble wrap, specialist breathable bubble wrap, tissue paper, scissors, fragile stickers, marker pen. Having these essentials on hand really make the move easier as you don’t have to keep rushing out to the shop or breaking items that haven’t been packed well.

Keep things accessible

Pack an overnight bag for everyone and put them somewhere separate where they can be easily found such as the car boot or a with a friend or family member. It is also important to have essentials at hand, such as the kettle, tea and coffee, milk, sugar, snacks etc; phone chargers; house paperwork; contact numbers for utility suppliers yellow pages; vase ( as someone will inevitably send you flowers); scissors and a takeaway leaflets for when you don’t want to cook later on.

Have an order

Start with rooms or objects you know you’ll not need anytime soon. If you don’t use it regularly then chances are that you don’t need it in the few weeks leading up to the big move. Plus, seasonal items you’re currently not using such as garden tools, coats and Christmas lights can all be packed away in advance.
